Yvonne Mathisen is Scottish born, contemporary figurative artist residing in the bayside area of Brisbane, Australia.
Her first major series of works titled, “By Candle or by Sun”, are predominantly figurative oil paintings.
Energetic brushstrokes, a play with light, shadow, and glow with the combination of abstraction and figuration complete her compositions. Previously she has worked on commission works, dedicating time to developing her style and building a portfolio of works.
Interest in the Fine Arts and dedication to drawing practice started for artist Yvonne Mathisen as a teen in the early 90’s when she enrolled in life drawing classes at Edinburgh School of Art.
“You should start now, and never stop (drawing the figure)” her tutor said at the time. She listened and found that he was right.
Later in her life while studying at Glasgow School of Art, for foundation studies, Yvonne was introduced to the ground-breaking work of architect, Charles Rennie Mackintosh and the architectural aspect of light. Inspiration for her frequently derives from travel, and how light can distinguish the personality of place and time.
At 21 she moved to Australia and completed a Diploma of Fine Arts at Sydney Gallery School where she was fortunate enough to study under the renowned Australian contemporary artist, Anwen Keeling.
It was here that she began to understand that painting was her thing.
