Kathy Jonas

Born, raised and educated in Melbourne, I set out in my late teens to explore this beautiful country.  I have lived, worked and raised my family in some amazing places, including outback South Australia / Northern Territory, Sydney, Canberra, Port Stephens and the Hunter Valley, before finally settling down in Brisbane.

I have sketched and painted whenever I could find the opportunity, but it wasn’t until my children were independent and semi-retirement became reality that I was able to truly reignite my passion for art; in 2012 I returned to the easel in earnest.

Living by the bay has been a major factor influencing my art practise, with Stradbroke, Moreton and Fraser Islands literally at my doorstep, providing much inspiration. I love the Bay’s ever-changing moods, its breathtakingly pristine, turquoise waters and startling white beaches; it is such a privilege to live here.  This beauty inspires me to paint; to capture the light and colour and strive to put it on canvas.  My paintings are reminiscent of places, events and people in my life, and I feel very ‘connected’ to my artwork – perhaps this is why I find painting such a therapeutic, almost meditative, activity.

I enjoy painting a variety of subjects, including portraits, animals and colourful abstracts, but mostly I enjoy painting seascapes.  Also popular are my colourful, textured seahorses created with mixed media, such as impasto, inks and acrylics.
